The Divinity Students Association Endowment Fund was established to enhance student life at the University of Chicago Divinity School.

Possible uses for the DSA endowment include, but are not limited student travel grants, student professional development grants, funding for graduate student conferences, and to help cover the cost of professional membership fees.

Divinity School students may also propose that the Fund be used to support special projects designed to enrich the Divinity School community. Special request must be brought to the DSA board.

Student Travel Grants
The DSA Endowment Fund supports travel costs for Divinity School students presenting at professional academic conferences. The maximum amount awarded for domestic travel is $350; the maximum amount awarded for international travel is $500. The grant may cover hotel, travel, or registration fees. Grant recipients receive funds after travel has occurred in the form of a reimbursement.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be registered Divinity students at the University of Chicago
  • Applicants must be presenting at the conference they are attending
  • Students can receive up to $500 per academic year (September-August) from the DSA Endowment Fund
  • Students can receive only one travel grant per academic year (September-August)

Application Process
Grant applications must be submitted at least 1 month prior to the dates during which the award will be used. In order to be considered for the award, a student must submit a fully completed application, including:

  • Application form
  • Documentation of presentation at a conference (e.g. brochure listing your entry)
  • Reimbursement form (after travel has occurred)
  • Receipt copies documenting travel expenses
  • Student Reimbursement Certification Form

Students should apply for Perrin Fund grants at the same time as applying for the DSA Travel Grant; doctoral students may also be eligible for a GSA Travel Grant.

  1. The Graduate Council Travel Fund
    The Graduate Council provides two levels of funding: 1) a Basic level for students attending workshops and professional meetings and 2) an Advanced level for students presenting original work via an academic talk, paper or poster presentation. The maximum amount that can be given for either domestic or international travel will be $350 at the Basic level and $600 at the Advanced level. These funds can only subsidize conference registration fee or transportation costs; food, alcohol, and other incidentals will not be covered. http://gc.uchicago.edu/#funding
  2. Perrin Memorial Fund
    Grants of $200 for domestic conferences, and $300 for international conferences are available through the Perrin Memorial Fund. Students may receive up to two grants per academic year. For more information, contact the Dean of Students.

 

Professional Development Grants
Divinity School students may also submit reimbursements for professional development fees. These may include but are not limited to fees for conferences, workshops, summer intensive studies, retreats, etc that prepare students for a variety of careers after graduate school. The total amount should not exceed $150. Professional development grants are subject to the availability of funds and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

  • Students can receive up to $500 per academic year (September-August) from the DSA Endowment Fund
  • Students can receive only one professional development grant per academic year (September-August)

  • One letter of recommendation from the student’s UChicago academic advisor outlining the importance of the event for the student’s career development

Professional Membership Fees
Divinity School students may also submit reimbursements for student membership fees paid to professional organizations, including AAR and SBL. Students may apply for only one membership fee reimbursement a year from the DSA Endowment Fund, and the total amount should not exceed $75. Membership fee reimbursements are subject to the availability of funds and therefore cannot be guaranteed.

Graduate Student Conference Support

Divinity School students who wish to organize academic conferences or professional meetings should first seek support from one or more of the Student Clubs. If more funding is needed, or if students are unable to receive support from elsewhere, they may apply for a grant from the DSA Endowment Fund. Please contact the DSA at for more information.
